South Carolina football has picked up four commitments in the past week and a half, sending Gamecock Nation into a frenzy heading into the biggest official visit weekend of the year. Two prospects (5-star punter Mason Love and 3-star linebacker Fred Johnson) have announced their pledges and confirmed they were the names of two of Gamecock head coach Shane Beamer’s four #WelcomeHome tweets.
On Friday, the third baseman announced his public commitment.
Matthew Fuller, a A 4-star running back according to ESPN, announced his commitment to play for the Gamecocks and running backs coach Montario Hardesty. He is the No. 1 running back in the 2024 class, and the Gamecocks are expected to take two players.
Fuller is a big running back (6’0″ and 210 pounds) who is entering his senior season at Wayne County High School this fall, where he will play for Jaybo Shaw, the brother of Gamecock legend Connor Shaw. He’s not an overly quick back, but doesn’t get caught behind either. Fuller chose the Gamecocks over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
Four-star running back Daniel Hill (from Meridian, Mississippi) is currently on campus for his official visit, and the Gamecocks are at the top of his list along with Alabama. 4-star Benton, Arkansas product Braylen Russell is also very interested in the Gamecocks and made Carolina a top-five pick.
South Carolina football currently has 4 scholarship players, but one is a Division II transfer (Newberry commit Mario Anderson), one is new at the position (defensive back-turned-receiver Dakereon Joyner), one is a true freshman (DJay Braswell), and one is a 175-pounder (Juju McDowell). Adding Fuller (and at least one in the class of 2024) fills the space for the future, as three of the four scholarship players are juniors or seniors.
With Fuller announcing his commitment, there’s one more mystery #WelcomeHome heading into a busy recruiting weekend.
