Parents question their children’s safety following outbreaks of the measles

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Recent measles outbreaks, not only in our state, but across the country have parents questioning their children’s safety.

Just this year, health officials in Michigan have confirmed cases in Oakland, Kent, Macomb, Montcalm, and Ingham Counties with a possible case out of Eaton County still under investigation.

“It’s a little scary and I feel bad for the kids. Measles sounds awful,” said a concerned parent.

Doctors recommend that children 12 to 15 months of age get the first dose of the vaccine, with an exception for babies that are 6 months if they’re planning to travel internationally, or into and area that is high risk.

However, what does that mean for babies younger than that?

Doctor’s say getting your vaccine protects the young children around you.

“When an individual gets the two doses they’re supposed to appropriately they have 97% protection,” said Dr. Nike Shoyinka, Medical Health Officer for the Ingham County Health Department.

It’s also important to be cautious of where you’re taking them and avoid going around people that are sick.

“It’s an airborne virus, so it usually requires close contact or being in the same space as them, so if we’re outdoors we’re really not worried about it. That’s one of the nicer things about the warmer weather,” said Dr. John Brooks, Director of Infection Prevention with McLaren.

If your child is eligible, doctors say clinics, pharmacies, and your pediatricians office are the best options.

Avoid the Emergency Room because that is where all of the sick people are.
