BAKERSFIELD, California. Students have reportedly been sanctioned after an incident that sparked an online petition, a viral TikTok video and several Snapchat messages alleging that students were harassed at the start of Pride Month at Centennial High School.
The TikTok, which has more than 144,000 views, was published Friday and referred to Snapchat videos of students dressed in Trump flags, and accused them of harassing non-heterosexual students.
The woman says her son (who recently told her he was transgender) told her about the incidents, while saying the teachers did nothing.
A separate article from local activist group 661VoicesHeard says the students took another screenshot, showing a pride flag in a urinal. According to the publications, at least one student urinated on it.
In response to KGET-17, the Kern High School District wrote, “The Kern High School District and Centennial High School recognize that students have different views and opinions. One of the goals of the educational process is to teach students to communicate with one another respectfully. Last week, students were briefed on the expectation of peaceful expression on campus. The school administration investigated reports of misconduct associated with student exchanges on campus to determine appropriate corrective action. Corrective action has been taken with the appropriate students. The district is prohibited from disclosing the disciplinary results of students. ”
A petition on Change.org had gathered more than 2,500 signatures as of Monday evening, calling for disciplinary action by the school and the district.
