Su Bingtian has confirmed his strong form by taking 9.98 seconds to win the 100 meters in China’s national athletics trials at the Tokyo Olympics in Shaoxing, local media said.
The 31-year-old, the first Asian-born athlete to go less than 10 seconds in blue-lined sprint, ran at the same time in Zhaoqing in April.
“The result was satisfactory even though my body was not in top condition,” Su told China’s state news agency Xinhua after Friday’s run.
Time, Su’s seventh legal leg, a 10-second run, was the 13th fastest in the world this year.
Su plans to compete at his third Olympics in Tokyo this summer and will be a key member of China’s 4x100m message team, which he helped win a silver medal at the 2015 Beijing World Championships and fourth at the Rio Games.
“We are not happy that last time we were fourth in the 4x100m message event,” Su added. “It will take a lot of effort if we want to take the medal this time, but our goal has not changed.”
