Alyna Barriga, a senior at Pioneer Valley High School, placed first in the regional competition and third in the state in the FCCLA STAR: Fashion Construction event.
SANTA MARIA Alyna Barriga, a senior at Pioneer Valley High School, did well at the recent FCCLA STAR event: Fashion Construction.
Alyna placed first in the regional competition and third at the 2021 California State Leadership Conference. She was awarded a $2,000 scholarship and a sewing machine.
The competition is virtual.
Alyna makes outfits along with display boards with fabrics and analysis of costs, time spent on projects and detailed photos, according to a news release. She made the outfit herself at home with the help of Zoom from teacher Melissa Diaz.
I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity to compete in fashion construction this year, despite the changing circumstances due to COVID-19, said Alyna in a news release. I decided to compete because of the encouragement I received from my FCCLA advisor and because sewing is something I love to do. I faced challenges involving time management as well as new sewing skills. Overall, my experience was very rewarding and enjoyable.
Alyna makes Ms. Diaz was impressed by her level of skill and understanding of clothing construction.
This year, despite the COVID challenges, she was able to create beautifully constructed and challenging outfits, said Ms. Diaz. Alyna is also an amazing person who is kind, respectful, dedicated and hardworking! I will miss her positive attitude and cheerful nature next year.
