New head coach Steve Sarkisian revealed that a really big weekend was expected for the 2022 Texas football recruitment class. Texas will host a large number of visitors during the second weekend during the official visit period this month. June was a really busy time for the new Texas coaching staff, and this weekend seemed to host the most critical visitors.
Texas landed its first class opportunity of the season this weekend in the form of a three-star Liberty (NV) athlete under radar Anthony Jones. This 6 foot 5 and 245 pound is the first engagement (Williams Field’s long snapper outside Lance St. Louis) in over a month. An earlier commitment in class 2022 was four-star Brophy College Prep defending lineman Zac Swanson.
Jones ’engagement took place on his Twitter timeline on the night of June 12th. His engagement took place over the weekend on the busiest day of the official visit schedule. And it gave Sark and Longhorns a real boost to the second half of the travel season this month.
Texas ’2022 recruitment class in Texas moves back on the right track after landing 3-star ATH Anthony Jones
This product from Henderson, NV began to gain real grip with the Longhorns after hiring new defense coordinator / linebackers coach Pete Kwiatkowski. Jones agreed to land with head coach Jimmy Lake and the Washington Huskies before Sark and Longhorns hired Kwiatkowski.
This connection seems to have been what won Jones ’commitment to Texas when everything was said and done.
This commitment from Jones came during his official visit with the Longhorns, which was specifically scheduled for June 11th. Texas had one of three official visits in books with Jones in June. The other two were with the Miami Hurricanes (June 4) and the Oregon Ducks (June 25).
But the official visit Jones had planned with the Ducks has now diminished its significance.
Texas has begun to add real diversity with non-blue chips in their 2022 class. It can be something valuable on the road, as this utility can fill the depth chart in unique ways on the road.
Still, Jones is expected to either play either at the tight end or along the front seven as the Longhorns move forward. Kwiatkowski has been recruiting Jones for a long time since the day he worked as coaches in Washington. He probably knows well where he’s going to use Jones on the defensive side.
If Jones stops playing in front of the Longhorns in seven, it means that about half of the 2022 class commitments now fit this description. Just a few months ago, question marks arose as to where the front seven directions could go in class 2022. Several of those question marks have now been answered by a trio of Sark, Kwiatkowski, and other defense coordinators / linebackers coach Jeff Choate.
Jones decided to commit to Texas because of offers from nine other schools. Some of the other notable schools on his serving form are Oregon, Miami, Washington, Arizona Wildcats, Colorado Buffaloes, and USC Trojans.
In addition, Jones ranks outside the nation’s 567,2022 high schools, 48 athletes and 11 in Nevada (247Sports Composite). And Top247 places him as the 42nd athlete and 10th team from Nevada.
According to the 247Sports Team Composite list, the 2022 Texas recruiting class is now ranked 8th in the nation and behind the Oklahoma Sooners in second place in the Big 12. Texas now has 20 commitments in class 2022, with top rated four-star Junipero Serra quarterback Maalik Murphy.
