Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier is an upcoming competitive Battle Royale developed and published by Square Enix for iOS and Android mobile devices. The game will arrive later in 2021.
As it derives from the name of the game, the events of the title are set in the universe of Final Fantasy VII, 30 years before those of FFVII. As for the plot, the players are subjected to the tests of the Shinra Electric Power Company for SOLDIER candidates. It is up to the players to use every tool at their disposal, from magic to special abilities to weapons, to triumph on this battlefield created in the virtual simulation of Midgar.
The graphics of the title made me think of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, published by Square Enix for PlayStation Portable (PSP), but revamped for more modern devices and with the Battle Royale theme in mind. The game features a third person point of view, with the camera located behind your character’s back.
The aesthetic is very colorful, with a large number of various effects and animations. The use of matter (FFVII’s version of magic) seems surprising, the battles against monsters and bosses almost theatrical. A wide variety of places and buildings are equally impressive.
The gameplay is based on a competitive theme with the player tasked with remaining the last SOLDIER standing in a virtual test simulator by taking down the opposition by any means necessary. On the main screen, you can customize your character by choosing his appearance, emotions displayed, vehicle, and so on.
Before a particular match starts, you are free to choose which type you want to participate in: solo or team match. If you choose teams, you will join other players to form a 3-man team.
You can choose from various styles such as Warrior, Sorcerer, Scout or Monk, each of which has their own special abilities and bonuses. A properly assembled team has a better chance of winning a match.
The start of a game looks very interesting: you are flying in a helicopter and you can choose a drop point. If you are part of a team, the choice is made by the team leader who also acts as a driver.
After landing, the battle begins. There is a huge number of various weapons, matter, support items, equipment such as necklaces scattered around the map. In addition, you can find a means of transportation: motorcycles, military trucks, chocobos and more.
Each fighter can carry 2 small weapons, up to 3 types of matter and their own unique special ability with a cooldown. Materia has its own cooldown and MP cost.
When you are playing in a team match, you can place markers that are visible to everyone. Help coordinate the movement of your team. The game also offers chat options, both text and voice.
The combination of matter or your weapon choices greatly affects the teams’ chances of survival and victory. Healing matter can save your teammates’ lives more than once by the end of the trial, while sniper rifles will make it extremely difficult for enemies to gain on your position.
Any type of player will find a style that suits them: revolvers and ice matter? Perfect, slow down your opponent and finish him off with a few precise hits. Fire and rifle matter? Lethal explosive area damage before you get close and score your kill. Healing matter and a machine gun? Keep enemies at a distance while healing other party members.
Any style of play has a corresponding weapon and material choices. Poison your enemy, blow them up, slow them down with ice, or maybe blind them to save you with healing and overwhelm the enemy at a later time.
Variability and randomness keep you busy – what is best to collect right from the start? What can be eliminated in the middle of the game? The choice is up to you, but remember that more than your characters’ lives are riding on it.
Over time, the available area of the map will gradually decrease, guiding all remaining players to a certain point in the location and forcing them to fight more actively. The game also features various missions issued during the battle: open 3 boxes in 5 minutes, kill a dragon, kill a certain boss, etc. It is up to you to decide whether to complete them.
Defeating a boss releases an incredible amount of ammo, equipment, materials and weapons. However, no one prevents enemy players from attacking you during combat
Each weapon and matter has its own quality: white, green, blue, purple and orange. The better the quality, the better the damage. You can upgrade your equipment by interacting with certain machines. It will only require an insane amount of credits that you can get by destroying the monsters on the map – don’t expect to immediately upgrade your weapon to purple quality without going crazy hunting first.
Updating the matter is another matter entirely; 2 white materials can be combined into one green. For example, two white healing materials would give green healing matter. You have to keep collecting it like this for more updates.
You can swap one of your two firearms at any time. Don’t be greedy when collecting ammo and med kits as your bag has limited space. It is not possible to take 50 kits and 1000 ammo. The maximum you can handle is around 120 rounds for your first firearm, 60-90 for the second, and around 5 med kits. The game makes you think strategically and tactically: where to go, what to take with you, whether or not to attack monsters and so on.
Professionals:
Pleasant graphics The interesting Battle Royale interprets the classic Final Fantasy elements of the Final Fantasy franchise represented in the game
Versus:
Lack of PvE content Very small story, which is strange for a Final Fantasy game. If you are playing in teams and one of the players on your team gets disconnected, it basically means a loss Sometimes characters get stuck and start to give up; some ping problems even with a good internet connection.
