Donald L. Sweeney passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. A native of Clinton, Iowa, and a former Clinton Herald employee, Don is a longtime resident of Glenview, Illinois.
He graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a degree in Electrical Engineering before embarking on a career supporting high tech companies, Gates Radio, Collins Radio, AT & T-Teletype, and Extel Corporation previously, including wife Marilyn and son Corey, started his own company, DLS Electronic Systems, now one of the largest independent testing and consulting laboratories in North America.
Don has been active in the American Council of Independent Laboratories as a member of the Conformity Assessment and Product Certification Section. He is a strong supporter and advocate of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Society, serving the Society in numerous roles for more than forty years, with the Board of Directors over 18 years, on standards and symposium committees, serving as Angel in many chapters of the EMC Society, as well as chapter chairman of the Chicago EMC Society. Don received the prestigious Laurence G Cumming Award for outstanding managerial contributions and overall achievement by the IEEE EMC Society and EMC Education, and was an original inductee in the IEEE EMC Society Hall of Fame.
Don is a founding executive of the U.S. Council of EMC Laboratories (USCEL) and is iNARTE certified as an EMC engineer. He has also passed on his expertise by teaching EMI Design at the University of Wisconsin, Oakton Community College, and independently around the world for over 35 years. His technical training programs, including published papers, articles, contributions to the book Controlling Radiated Emissions by Design, and his chapter in the Digital Avionics Handbook Understanding the Role of RTCA DO-160 in Avionics Certification The process has been used and implemented in electronic design until now, in the military, avionics, radio, wireless and other high-tech applications and products.
Don is an inspiration to his community, serves as an Elder at North Branch Bible Church in Glenview, builds homes for Habitat for Humanity, plays Santa Claus for Breakthrough Urban Ministries, helps the homeless, and promotes many child for the South Shore Drill Team. Don sponsors regular visits to his testing laboratories for college students, including the department of Electrical Engineering at Purdue University. He was an educator and made available his wisdom and experience to many young engineers. Don and the DLS organization hosted a hall meeting, led by congressman Dan Schneider, that addressed both technical support to the industry, as well as humanitarian concerns.
Don is survived by his wife Marilyn, his son Corey, his brother Richard, and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Don’s Life will include a visit on Friday July 16, 6:00 – 8:00 pm, North Branch Bible Church, 3030 Central Road, Glenview and a memorial service Saturday July 17, 1:00 pm afternoon, North Branch Bible Church. Masks are required for both visit and service.
