The PHOENIX Boise State Women’s Tennis Program has been nominated for the 2021 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Mountain Service Award. The Broncos stood out from the other 23 programs in the area, including schools with ties to Mountain West, Pac-12, Big Sky and Conference USA.
“We are incredibly grateful to be in the community we are in,” said the tennis director and head coach Beck Roghaar. “In a year when it was hard to get together, we were still excited to try to find ways to connect with the community we care about so much.”
The team’s primary initiative saw it partner with the North Star Charter School by creating a pen pal program in the second grade class. The program included writing letters and sending photos and videos to improve communication and inspire students.
The team garnered a total of 35 hours of community service, which everyone in the program is incredibly proud of. “Amidst everything that is happening in the world, our student-athletes continued to commit to our community,” said the assistant coach Maria Lopez.
This was the second year in a row that the women’s tennis program has received an award, and for the third consecutive season, the ITA has awarded the Bronco tennis team a public service, women in 2020 and 2021 and men in 2019.
“The young men and women in our program recognize what a special opportunity it is to be a part of Boise State Tennis and have a community behind us,” Roghaar said. “All of the ways we can serve them are very important to us because that community is so important to us.”
