The Progressive Democrats’ call for student debt cancellation continues. Edward Lawrence of FOX Business with the latter.
Safe Spaces, Critical Race Theory, and Campus Policing Funding. These are just three pillars of the American university experience in 2021.
Now, the Biden administration is facing questions about its willingness to add the higher education grant to this list – amid a new study claiming undergraduate enrollment is down from last spring. and that pundits increasingly shout that campuses are becoming “fertile land for Democratic voters.”
“It is clear that universities have taken a left turn in recent years. I think no one can disagree with this,” said Tomas Philipson, former acting chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers (ECA) in the Trump administration in an exclusive interview with FOX Business.
According to experts such as Philipson, the reason for this shift to the left is indoctrination into Democratic politics through progressive policies such as subsidies.
“I feel like public education or public student loan grants – which I think are very similar in terms of financial impact – are just a way to pay for future voters who like the great government. And that is essentially what is [happening] on our college campuses, ”continued Philipson, professor at the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago.
BIDEN ADMINISTRATION CANCELS $ 500M IN STUDENT LOAN DEBT
“[The Biden administration] pushes in this direction, probably because they know that if children go to school, they are more likely to vote Democratic, ”noted the former economic adviser to the administration George W. Bush.
Indeed, President Biden is a proponent of canceling student loans, forgiving $ 500 million in debt on Monday. He also discussed the issue at a November press conference in Wilmington, Del., Shortly after his election victory, when asked about his plans to deal with the issue.
“It’s in my plan which I laid out in detail,” Biden said. “For example, legislation passed by the Democratic House calls for an immediate $ 10,000 student loan forgiveness. This is holding people back. They have real problems. They have to make choices between paying their student loans and paying their rent. “These kinds of decisions. It should be done immediately.”
However, some progressives believe Biden does not go far enough on the matter and wonder what the delay is.
“I don’t think that’s enough,” said Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, DN.Y. Biden’s figure of $ 10,000 said at a virtual city hall event.
“We have to push it. I believe in full student loan debt forgiveness. But we have to push it to the bare minimum to a floor of $ 50,000 that Sen. [Elizabeth] Warren and the Senator [Chuck] Schumer has also moved forward, “commented the New York lawmaker.
POWELL SAYS THAT THE RAPIDLY GROWING ECONOMY, INFLATION “IN PARTICULAR”
This push concerns Philipson, who studied the issue while he was at CEA in the Trump administration. His team found that free public higher education abroad often offered lower rates of return than more expensive, privately funded American education.
“It sounds a bit confusing: how can something free have a lower rate of return? But what many people forget is that the biggest cost of an education is not your tuition; the highest cost is many times you don’t earn money. while you’re sitting in the classroom, ”said former principal Becker Friedman at the University of Chicago.
“We compared the Nordic countries – many of which have ‘free’ (tax-funded) education – with American education. The US yield is much higher – sometimes five times not as much in the Nordic countries, ”he said.
Battles in higher education have become increasingly controversial, with conservatives accusing university administrations and educators of liberal bias, especially when it comes to college grants.
“Colleges have become centers of indoctrination for the left,” said Kara Zupkus, national spokesperson for the Young America’s Foundation (YAF), which features prominently on many American college campuses but complained about it. ‘a muzzling by the most senior officials in recent years. “There has been a drastic shift over the past decade toward pampering students and preventing them from hearing a different point of view. These students are essentially running the university, forcing administrators to give in to their demands. or to be called “racist, sexist, fanatic”. ”

Zupkus agreed with Philipson that the student loan cancellation is inherently flawed.
“A policy like canceling student loans may seem attractive to a student at first glance, but the consequences for our country are dire,” she said. “Many students on campus are simply learning what to think, rather than how to think – and this leads to a lack of critical thinking skills. Teachers have no problem moving their curricula forward in the classroom, trying to ostracize anyone who dares to disagree. “
