BioWares Mac Walters revealed that the idea of a Mass Effect movie was eventually scrapped because it would be difficult to tell a solid story in 90 to 120 minutes. In an interview with Business Insider, Walters said a TV series would make more sense because TV episodes are similar to how a game tells its story across different levels and missions.
When we build a Mass Effect game, we have a backbone, or an overall story that we want to tell, but each level or mission is like its own TV episode, Walters told Business Insider. It is not written ahead of time. It is written the moment we get there. Then it’s added to the main story and sometimes the main story is changed because we did something really interesting in that episode. So long-running storytelling is a great place for game franchises.
In 2020, Legendary Pictures struck a deal with Electronic Arts to produce a Mass Effect film, which would be released by Warner Bros. However, the project failed.
It felt like we were always fighting IP, Walters recalled. What story will we tell in 90 to 120 minutes? Will we do it justice? But then he never recovered, not for lack of attempts.
Walters said the film project was an interesting experiment, but it wouldn’t do the show justice. However, he is in favor of a future television adaptation.
