Frozen shrimp recalled because they may be contaminated with salmonella, six sick

Avanti Frozen Foods has recalled frozen cooked, peeled, deveined shrimp sold in various sizes because they may be contaminated with salmonella, the US Food and Drug Administration said.

According to the FDA, there have been six reports of salmonella-related illnesses associated with this distribution of cooked shrimp to date.

The shrimp is distributed nationwide from the end of December 2020 to the end of February 2021 under the brand names Censea, Hannaford, Open Acres, Waterfront Bistro, Honest Catch, COS, 365 and Meijer.

According to the FDA, the salmonella organism can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Healthy individuals infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which can be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare cases, an infection with salmonella can cause the organism to enter the bloodstream and cause more serious illnesses, such as arterial infections (ie, infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis.

The FDA said: The potential for contamination was identified by the FDA based on previous testing of frozen cooked shrimp imported by Avanti Frozen Foods that were found to contain Salmonella.

Avanti Frozen Foods did not distribute and destroyed that earlier shipment that was found to be in violation. The company has taken preventive measures to eliminate the chance of future contamination.

All recalled frozen cooked shrimp have an expiration date of 2022.
