WASHINGTON — A federal judge on Monday dismissed antitrust lawsuits brought by the federal government and most states against Facebook, a big win for the company before the cases barely started on the ground.
US District Judge James Boasberg in Washington has granted the social media giant’s requests to dismiss lawsuits brought by the Federal Trade Commission and state attorneys general in December.
Judge Boasberg said the FTC’s lawsuit was “legally insufficient” because it did not make sufficient claims to support antitrust lawsuits against Facebook. However, the judge said the commission could try again and give it 30 days to try to file an amended case.
The judge dismissed the states’ case entirely, largely on the grounds that the attorney general waited too long to present their cases.
