One man was killed and another was injured after a drilling rig collapsed at the University of Philadelphia on Tuesday night.
The rig was unloading equipment from a tractor-trailer and putting it on a job site at 3100 Block of Convention Street just before 8:30 p.m. when it overturned and collapsed.
Both the excavator operator and a 55-year-old worker were tucked under the machine, which was originally described as a crane. Rescue teams managed to get the two men out. They were taken to the Presbyterian Hospital, where the death of the worker was announced at 9:45 p.m.
Officials have not yet disclosed the condition of the rig operator.
“Cook Drilling” was seen on the side of the crane. NBC10 reached out to a spokesperson for the Bucks County-based company who said the owner was heading to the scene.
Firefighters also said there was a fuel leak from the crane and L&I responded to the scene.
The investigation into the incident continued on Tuesday morning. Anticipate some potential traffic problems in the area.
