Mercy employees will need to receive the COVID-19 vaccine starting September 30.
The new requirement comes as the Delta variant of COVID-19 continues to spread rapidly, leading to increased hospitalizations at Mercy hospitals in Fort Smith and Rogers, according to a press release from Mercy.
Mercy has seen the impact of the protection offered by vaccines, the statement added. The majority of Mercy’s patients recently hospitalized with COVID-19 have not been vaccinated.
“What we’re seeing is the Associated Press’s analysis of CDC data,” said Dr. John Mohart, senior vice president of clinical services at Mercy, in the statement. “More than 95% of recent hospitalizations in the United States are unvaccinated people. The data is clear. Vaccination is the key to saving lives.
With COVID-19 vaccine requirement, Mercy executives say they are joining dozens of healthcare organizations across the United States who recognize that vaccination protects patients and is “crucial to protecting health public and end the pandemic, ”the statement added.
Pfizer and Moderna have both applied to the Food and Drug Administration for full approval of their COVID-19 vaccines. Approval is expected soon, says Mercy. COVID-19 vaccines have been found to be safe and proven to be effective with more than 171 million Americans already vaccinated, the statement added.
“It is essential that we take these steps to protect the health of our colleagues and patients at Mercy,” said Dr William Sistrunk, infectious disease specialist at Mercy, in the statement. “As healthcare leaders in our communities, it’s important that we set the standard to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Vaccination is our best defense against the virus and has already provided many of our colleagues with the protection they need to care for our patients. Our goal is to ensure the safest work environment possible for our colleagues and patients while also being part of efforts to stop the spread of the virus in the communities we serve. “
