Every Grand Theft Auto minigame is worse than bowling with Roman

Roman’s incessant calls to go bowling might be annoying, but the actual minigame is far from the worst available in Grand Theft Auto history.

Everyone who has played Grand Theft Auto 4 will remember Niko Bellic’s annoying cousin Roman who constantly called him to go bowling with him. The interaction spawned several memes and helped turn Roman into one of GTA’s most infamous characters. And, while the player base’s aversion to Roman’s relentless calls is justified, the actual minigame is far from the worst in Grand Theft Auto’s long history.

Even within the Grand Theft Auto 4 DLC, players can find a worse minigame. The champagne drinking contest in The Ballad of Gay Tony is incredibly simplistic, requiring players to follow a few simple QTEs to complete it. Bowling, at least, has real mechanics. Rockstar Games has made some of these QTE-based minigames that aren’t very fun. Other examples include the Lowrider Challenge in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and yoga in Grand Theft Auto 5. These challenges lack Roman’s aggravating calls, but playing their respective minigames isn’t as fun as hitting the lanes.

Another contender for the worst GTA minigame is the collection of arcade games that Rockstar has put in San Andreas. Those games do a good job of emulating old arcade classics, but they are very monotonous, which leads to them getting boring quickly. Unlike the new arcade games from Grand Theft Auto Online, there’s really no reason to play games like Go Go Space Monkey, Duality, or They Crawled from Uranus more than once.

What are the worst minigames in Grand Theft Auto

On top of that, there’s both basketball in San Andreas and Keepie-Uppy Beach Ball in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. To Rockstar’s credit, neither game is a true minigame as it feels more like random side activities. Players can track their progress, but neither game is developed in any real way. Instead, it looks like Rockstar came up with ideas for something bigger and then discarded it during development.

The worst minigame in the series, however, is that of Beefy Baron in San Andreas. To unlock this minigame as well, players must first complete all three of Zero’s remote-controlled vehicle missions, which are already considered some of the most frustrating missions Rockstar has ever done. After that slog, the game offers a chance to go back and essentially repeat the second mission where CJ has to control an RC plane and kill Berkley’s delivery vans. The idea of anyone wanting to undergo that research again is staggering. Fortunately, Rockstar does not require this minigame to be 100% complete, so it is safely skipped. That, however, doesn’t make it a Grand Theft Auto minigame anyone should consider playing.
