The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 jolted the Sultan Kudarat region on Sunday, July 11.

Phivolks said the quake occurred around 2:45 am and traced its epicenter 14 kilometers southwest of Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat.

The earthquake occurred 55 km below the epicenter.

Phivolks said the quake was felt as a “fairly strong” tremor at Intensity IV in Kalamanasig, Palembang and Lebak in Celta Kudarat.

It was also felt as a “weak” jolt at Intensity III in Cotabato.

Phivolcs instruments also recorded the earthquake at Intensity III in Kiamba and Sarangani, Intensity II in Zamboanga City, Intensity I in Malungon and Sarangani, and General Santos City.

The earthquake was tectonic in origin, which means that the tremor was caused by active fault movement in the area.
