Roy Keane charged with ‘sour grapes’ following criticism of Jack Grealish penalty

Trevor Sinclair thinks Roy Keane’s criticism of Jack Grealish’s penalty stems from a bit of “sour grapes.”

The England midfielder failed to join the Three Lions as they failed on penalties in the Euro 2020 final.

Gianluigi Donnarumma saved three penalties to guide the Azzurri to victory, including Bukayo Saka’s last.

Keane felt pros from more seasons like Grealish and Raheem Sterling should have stepped up before the Arsenal teenager.

The Manchester United legend told ITV: “If you’re Sterling or Grealish you can’t sit there and ask a young child to go and get a penalty in front of you.

“You can’t let a shy 19 year old ride in front of you.

“They have a lot more experience, Sterling won trophies, they had to get in front of the kid and stand up.”

Grealish has since responded on social media, insisting he offered to take one but allowed manager Gareth Southgate to make the final call.

The Aston Villa playmaker has had some excellent years as he helps build his home club into a top-flight team.

England’s caps came as a result, but in his youth Grealish represented the Republic of Ireland.

He played for the Emerald Isle at the U21 level before choosing the Three Lions.

And Sinclair believes Keane’s comments stemmed from bitterness over Grealish’s decision.

He told TalkSport: As we all know Roy Keane has an opinion. But you can’t just accept that knowing it’s not the truth.

Roy Keanes is not privileged, we are not privileged at talkSPORT to know what was going on in those meetings where we were talking about sanctions.

I believe Jacques. I don’t think it’s a shrinking purple. He is a player who is stepping up to the plate. When you want to make a name for yourself, that’s when you take it to the next level.

I think with Roy Keane, with the fact that Jack Grealish left the Irish squad, went to the England squad, I think there’s a bit of sour grapes there personally.

Speaking after the shootout loss at Wembley Southgate, he made it clear that the responsibility for who took the penalties and when was on him.

He said: “It’s my responsibility. I chose the players to shoot. We decided to make the changes towards the end of the game, and we win and lose together as a team.”

Regarding the shooters, as well as the order, he added: “We have worked with them in training. This is the order we arrived at. But it is my decision.”
