Alistair Brownlee has supported the decision of the International Olympic Committees to resume scheduled games in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, saying the segregated games are better than not at all.
Tokyo 2020 will start on Friday in an unprecedented background with the host city currently in an emergency, which means fans will not be able to get to most places and athletes will have to follow a strict code of conduct. That means much of the traditional Olympic experience will be severely weakened, but Brownlee, a gold medalist in the triathlon in both London 2012 and Rio 2016, believes the cancellation of the event would have been much less tasty for competitors.
I think they should go ahead, he said. I think the timing is going to be hard, but I think it was always hard. If not now, when? is the argument I made to this. It provides an excellent opportunity to show that these events can return to some sort of normal.
It is obviously a pity that the Olympics are not going forward as usual. It lacks so much of the Olympics, but I think, given the context in which we are, its a wonderful victory that it will happen. I think the Olympics are much better in this form than not Olympics for every athlete.
Brownlee will not defend his title this year after injury problems led him to stay out of the British men’s team. He believes his brother Jonny, who won the triathlon silver from Ria, will once again become a medal among the competing teams. 100m breaststroke champion Adam Peaty.
I think [Peaty] going to be massive in swimming, he’s just an absolute world-class performer, he said. Watching his race is fantastic.
Jonny is in good shape. She is prepared for the circumstances, she is fit, healthy and ready to leave. To be honest, he’s not a favorite, he’s been in recent games, but there are no favorites in that competition, its open. He has a very good chance of a medal; winning is likely to be relatively unlikely, but it can still happen.

Brownlee spoke at Guardian Live with other decorated Olympics Fatima Whitbread and Mary Peters. Whitbread is concerned that athletes have not reached the top of the Games as smaller events have been canceled or postponed and fear they will lose a valuable part of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic experience.
Athletes are sent in and out pretty quickly, which in a way is a little sad because they lose the spirit of the game’s purpose: bringing people together, holding the spirit of fair play, and helping to support each other, he said.
