Dr. Vin Gupta encourages J&J vaccine recipients to get a Pfizer or Moderna booster

ICU and lung physician Dr. Vin Gupta told CNBC that he is already encouraging patients who have received the single-shot Johnson & Johnson Covid vaccine to get a booster dose of Pfizer or Moderna amid the massive increase in cases of Delta heterozygous across the United States.

“AstraZeneca, when combined with a Pfizer or Moderna Booster, shows tremendous levels of protection against Delta, in terms of the levels of antibodies that are generated in patients,” Gupta, a professor at the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, told The News With Shepherd Smith. .

“I think these one-shot J & Jer’s should be given a chance, as we complete our clinical trial…I’m already telling my patients to do it, if they can get through to it.”

Gupta’s comments come on the heels of a new study from a lab at New York University Tuesday that raises serious questions about the effectiveness of a single-dose J&J vaccine against the highly infectious delta variant. The NYU study has not yet been reviewed, but it did find that antibody levels in those who received the J&J dose may be low enough to be less protective.

CNBC reporter Meg Terrell interviewed the study’s lead author, Dr. Ned Landau, who told her that the study suggests, “One should at least consider a second vaccination, a second injection” with the J&J vaccine, that is, from the same vaccine, or one from the same company. Pfizer or Moderna.

J&J told CNBC that its own data showed the vaccine “generated strong, sustained activity against the delta variant and other highly prevalent variants.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told CNBC that it stood by its statement earlier this month about boosters that “fully vaccinated Americans do not need a booster dose at this time.”

Gupta reinforced the case for giving a booster dose when he told host Shepherd Smith that “his definition of a full vaccination is two doses of the vaccine.”

Smith asked for clarification on whether Gupta considers that the nearly 13 million Americans who have received the J&J dose have already been fully vaccinated.

“I think you are protected, probably from hospital and severe outcomes from the delta variant for example, based on the data we have,” Gupta said. “I don’t think you have the same level of protection for transmitting the virus from someone who has received two doses of the vaccine like Pfizer or Moderna. I think that’s very clear at this point.”
