The increase in cases is not a one-day phenomenon, but is part of a larger trend in recent weeks. In the 30 days between June 21 and July 20, 6,572 San Diego residents tested positive for COVID-19. Of this group, 11% were fully vaccinated, while 89% were not.
“We are facing an unvaccinated pandemic,” said Nathan Fletcher, chairman of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. “A large majority of the increase in cases comes from unvaccinated people and they account for almost all hospitalizations. The way to slow the rise and protect yourself is to trust your doctor and get yourself vaccinated. “
As of June 21, only 56 new cases of the virus were reported. On July 7, the number of new cases crossed the 200 mark and did not decline.
“Vaccines are effective in preventing serious illness or death from COVID-19,” said Dr Wilma Wooten, county public health official. “If you haven’t been vaccinated, the time to get the shot is now. If you are late for your second dose, now is the time to get that second injection. “
Community outbreaks, hospitalizations and intensive care admissions have also increased dramatically. The county reported two more community homes on Friday, bringing the total number of homes in the past seven days to 25. A month ago, on June 23, only five community homes were reported.
A total of 98% of hospitalizations in the past 30 days are in people who are not vaccinated or have not completed the full series of the two-dose vaccine.
“Over the past few weeks, people who were not fully vaccinated against COVID-19 were seven times more likely to contract the virus,” said Dr Seema Shah, medical director of the Epidemiology and Services branch. vaccination program for HHSA. “The most infectious Delta variant is fast becoming the dominant strain among residents of San Diego County, and a single dose of the vaccine is only about 30% effective in protecting people from the disease. “
Despite the increase in cases and hospitalizations, county officials have not been notified of a return to the mask’s warrant, as Los Angeles did earlier this month.
More than 300,000 San Diegans are only partially vaccinated and late for their second injection. The county is working with medical providers to help them remind patients and also uses the San Diego vaccination registry to develop follow-up reminders for those who are late.
To facilitate access to COVID-19 vaccines, the county now operates the “Great Eight,” a collection of geographically distributed toll-free vaccination sites that allow people to choose one of three vaccines available in the United States, Moderna , Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson.
