Bishop’s Stortford MP Julie Marson received £4,479 redundancy pay for 74 days working as an assistant government whip.
He was appointed to the role of enforcer by disgraced Prime Minister Boris Johnson on July 8 last year after mass resignations led to his ouster. He also made her Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Work and Pensions.
The arrival of Liz Truss at 10 Downing Street signaled a brief departure from government for Mrs Marson when she was sacked from both roles by 20 September.
According to a UK Parliament biography of Mrs Marson, as of 27 October, the new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had reinstated her to the rank of Assistant Whip.
HM Treasury’s 2022-23 annual report and accounts, published this month, confirms that Julie Marson, Lord Commissioner of HM Treasury, was entitled to receive £4,479 in assistant government whip severance pay – 25% of her salary for the role.
According to the Cabinet Office, assistant whips are entitled to a salary of 20,261 but claim 17,917.
The 2022-23 annual report and accounts of the Department for Work and Pensions records Mrs Marson as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State (Minister for Employment), but notes that MP Julie Marson was an unpaid minister by the department. A severance payment of £4,479 was paid by HM Treasury.
The junior most salaried minister’s post normally fetches Rs 24,947 and the incumbents claim Rs 22,375 in addition to their salary as an MP, which rose to Rs 86,584 in April this year.
Previously Mrs Marson was an unpaid parliamentary private secretary, the first rung on the ministerial ladder at the Ministry of Justice when it was headed by former Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab.
In December 2019 he was elected as the MP for Hertford and Stortford, after standing on a pro-Boris and Brexit ticket. She became the first woman to win the seat since Marc Presque with a majority of over 19,000.
Previously, the former Thanet district councilor contested the Labour-held East London seat of Dagenham and Rainham in the 2015 general election and came third. She stood again two years later in the 2017 midterm elections, this time placing second and increasing her vote share by 16 percentage points.
Earlier this year, she survived a shock vote and was re-elected as the Hertford and Stortford Conservative Association candidate at the next general election.
After the executive rejected his re-election, he forced a general vote.
Indy understands that there were 117 votes in favor and 71 votes against Mrs Marsan being re-elected – 62% in favour. But only 32.9% of the total 355 party members entitled to vote supported him.
Born in Barking, 58, whose family home is 100 miles from Stortford on the Kent coast and a flat in Sawbridgeworth, the daughter of a policeman, she was educated at Woodford County High School for Girls in Essex and Downing College, Cambridge. Before entering politics, he worked in corporate banking for NatWest.
