The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) has announced that Thursday, August 12, will be a public holiday among all banks operating in the country to mark the new Islamic Hijri year of 1443.
The Egyptian stock exchange also announced it would be free on Thursday for the same occasion.
Egyptian banks and the stock exchange will resume operations from Sunday, August 15.
Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly had announced that August 12 will be a holiday on the Lunar New Year celebrations.
The Prime Minister’s Decree applies to ministries, government agencies, general authorities, local government units, state-owned enterprises and public sector companies.
The Department of Manpower is also expected to announce a paid vacation for private sector workers on Thursday.
The first day of the Islamic year is celebrated by most Muslims on the first day of the month of Muharram.
