Security strengthened in Mumbai for Independence Day | Mumbai news

The Mumbai Police has stepped up security across the city ahead of Independence Day celebrations.

Additional police personnel have been deployed at key government installations such as Mantralaya, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), etc. Security has also been strengthened at key religious sites, market areas, hotels, railways and metro stations, bus depots, nuclear research centers and defense installations, said a police officer.

There has been no specific terror alert from intelligence agencies to Mumbai ahead of Independence Day this year, but the police are not taking any chances and have prepared a comprehensive security arrangement for the city.

Deputy Police Commissioner (Operations) Chaitanya Siriprolu, who is the spokesman for the Mumbai Police, said Bomb Disposal and Search Unit (BDDS) units would regularly scan the buildings of major government and private installations. Police personnel will be posted to key government offices such as Mantralaya, and anti-sabotage measures will be taken, such as body searches and building checks by BDDS.

All police stations will remain vigilant in the form of static deployment and patrol to prevent any untoward incident, DCP added.

In all police stations, the anti-terror cell (ATC) and knocking officers have been activated to gather intelligence. Night patrol personnel and good morning squadrons have been ordered to be on high alert to avoid any public order problems, the Indian Police Service (IPS) officer said.

The special branch, crime branch, protection and security including BDDS will be sharp.

Social media lab (SML) officers would put extensive vigilance on the social media platform to ensure that abusive and sensitive posts don’t go viral and disrupt the law-and-order situation, another officer said.

The crime department officers are charged with the responsibility of keeping the history tokens in the city. Crime department personnel would also be part of the security bandoblast and patrol in plainclothes.

The city’s combat teams and the Quick Response Team (QRT) will be strategically on standby for immediate response, if needed.

The police also carried out a massive prevention action All Out Operation on Friday. During this drive, the police conducted surprise checks, nakabandi, comb operations and also conducted more intensive patrols and arrested 79 wanted suspects. The comb operation was performed on 230 sites.

Police also arrested 121 suspects under anti-narcotics laws, while 37 people were detained for illegal possession of weapons. Measures have also been taken against 46 criminals for violating outside orders, the police said.
