Amazon to hire 125,000 employees

Amazon (AMZN) said Tuesday that these jobs offer an average starting wage of more than $18 an hour higher than the $15 minimum wage and some of the roles include up to $3,000 sign-up bonuses. Amazon said last week it would offer to pay four years of college tuition for most of its employees walmart (WMT) and Target (CBDY) in offering similar benefits.
Many retailers and logistics companies are struggling to find employees and have increased their pay and benefits in response to the workforce crisis. In July, there were 879,000 unfilled vacancies in the retail sector and 222,000 in the transportation and warehousing industry, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“It’s a very competitive job market out there. And certainly the biggest contributor to inflationary pressures we’re seeing in the industry,” Amazon’s chief financial officer Brian Olsavsky said in July. “We spend a lot of money on signing and incentives.”

Businesses are anticipating strong demand and workforce during the holiday season. Retail sales will increase by up to 9% this holiday season from last year, while e-commerce sales will grow by up to 15%, Deloitte said in a forecast released Tuesday.

Amazon and Walmart hire permanent employees for the holidays, while UPS (UPS), Kohls (KSS), Michaels and others hire temporary staff. Amazon hasn’t announced plans for seasonal workers, but 100,000 came last year temporary workers.

Amazon’s business has skyrocketed during the pandemic as many shoppers, who were spending more time at home, increased their online purchases. The company has added more than 450,000 employees in the United States since the start of the pandemic and now has 950,000 American employees.

Another sign of its growth is that Amazon said Tuesday it will open more than 100 new facilities in September to package and ship goods to customers, including regional air hubs for its growing fleet of cargo aircraft. Amazon has opened more than 250 facilities this year.
