By becoming one of Breakthrough Energy Catalysts’ first anchor partners, American is supporting its ambitious climate commitments with concrete action to accelerate the development of critical emissions reduction solutions such as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

We see tremendous promise in Breakthrough Energy Catalyst’s mission, and our investment is a vote of confidence in the difference-making potential of this unique and collaborative approach, said Doug Parker, American chairman and CEO. We have an ambitious vision of a low-carbon future for our airline and a plan to match, but we know that our own efforts can only take us so far. By partnering with Catalyst, we helped accelerate and scale our industry’s emerging solutions, such as sustainable jet fuel, along with other technologies needed to reduce emissions from aviation and the entire economy.

Breakthrough Energy Catalyst is a unique model that brings together business, government and private philanthropy to accelerate adoption of critical next-generation clean technologies. Catalyst and its partners will work together to fund, manufacture and purchase the new solutions that will support a zero-carbon economy, but are currently more expensive than their existing fossil fuel-emitting counterparts. The difference between these costs is what is now called the Green Premium.

To prevent a climate catastrophe, a new industrial revolution is needed. We need to make the zero-emission technologies and products as cheap as the ones that do so that the whole world can afford to use them, said Bill Gates, founder of Breakthrough Energy. Catalyst will focus on supporting technologies that are vital for the world to achieve net-zero emissions, but are currently too expensive to deploy on a large scale. By coordinating investments and focusing them on these critical technologies, we can lower their green premiums and help them get to market faster so we can all meet our climate goals. American Airlines has shown both ambition and action when it comes to fighting climate change, and we applaud the leadership role they are taking by joining Catalyst as an anchor partner.

Catalyst will begin funding projects for four technologies: sustainable jet fuel, green hydrogen, direct air capture and long-term energy storage.

With a goal of reaching net zero by 2050 and a commitment to establish a science-based interim target, Americans plan to reduce their emissions largely dependent on the use of low-carbon fuel, namely SAF in increasing volumes in over time. Americans’ partnership with Catalyst will increase the airlines’ ongoing efforts to move SAF forward and scale the market. The airline has been taking delivery of SAF from Neste for over a year and is committed to using a total of 9 million gallons by 2023. In addition, American has agreed to terms for the purchase of up to 10 million gallons of carbon neutral SAF produced by Prometheus Fuels.

The Americans’ path to net zero also depends on maximizing the efficiency of its aircraft and their operation. .
