The company is releasing features on Google Maps and Google Flights to show how travel plans can contribute to climate change.
In addition to showing drivers the fastest way to their destination, Google Maps now shows the most economical route.
To provide the new feature, Google has included data from the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory, which estimates eco-friendly routing has the potential to prevent more than a million tons of carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere each year. That’s the equivalent of taking 200,000 cars off the road, according to Google.
In the Google Maps app, the most environmentally friendly route is shown with a small green leaf next to it. The route option contains information about how long the journey will take and how much fuel the driver can save.
Options for motorcyclists
It’s no secret that cycling is a more eco-friendly travel option than driving, and according to Google, the use of cycling directions on Maps has increased by a whopping 98% in the past year. The tech company is focused on tapping into cyclists with a new feature called “lite navigation” that gives cyclists key details about their routes.
This feature is introduced after Google learned of cyclists who were tired of following the turn-by-turn directions on their phones. Motorcyclists tend to put their phones away for most of the ride.
Lite navigation allows cyclists to see details about their route without having to keep their screens on or enable turn-by-turn navigation.
Cyclists can also track their travel progress, see their ETA updated in real time and find details about the elevation of their route.
Sharing bike and scooter
In addition to the bike feature, Paulo is introducing a feature that provides more information about bike and scooter sharing in 300 cities, including Berlin, New York and So Paulo. This new option allows Google Maps users to find nearby docking stations and determine how many vehicles are currently available.
To make this feature possible, Google is partnering with bicycle and scooter companies, including European-based Donkey Republic, Tier and Voi, as well as Bird and Spin, which are based in the US.
Find flights with less CO2 emissions
“New aircraft are generally less polluting than older aircraft,” the company said in its press release. “Emissions are increasing for premium economy and first-class seats because they take up more space and represent a larger share of total emissions,” Google added.
