Companies in the news:
Rogers Communications Inc. (TSX:RCI.B). 24 cents dropped to $56.31. The son of the late Rogers Communications Inc. founder Ted Rogers is asking for a BC Supreme Court ruling that would legitimize a board of directors he formed by replacing five of its members. Edward Rogers’ mother Loretta Rogers and sisters Melinda Rogers-Hixon and Martha Rogers argue that the board is illegal and does not comply with the laws in BC, where the company was incorporated. She and several other employees say the only legitimate version of the Rogers board is the one that existed last week, before Edward Rogers replaced five directors with people of his choice. Edward Rogers was relieved of his role as chairman of the board, but he remains at the helm of his family’s trust, which controls 97 percent of voting Class A shares and 10 percent of outstanding Class B shares. He has been at the center of a power struggle since media reports revealed he planned to give Rogers’ former chief financial officer Tony Staffieri the job of CEO Joe Natale, a move that family and board members have opposed. The ongoing feud has left Rogers in a state of uncertainty as it awaits regulatory approvals for a takeover of rival Shaw Communications Inc. of $26 billion.
George Weston Ltd. (TSX:WN). Drop of $2.15 or 1.6 percent to $136.41. George Weston Ltd. has signed an agreement to sell its fresh and frozen bakery business from Weston Foods to FGF Brands Inc. for $1.2 billion. The company put Weston Foods up for sale in March as part of a plan to focus on its retail and real estate business, including its large stake in Loblaw Companies Ltd. and interest in Choice Properties Real Estate Investment Trust. Weston Foods produces bread, rolls and other pastries in Canada and the US. The company makes private label products and brands such as Wonder, Ace Bakery and D’Italiano. The fresh and frozen bakery business accounted for about 75 percent of Weston Foods’ net sales in 2020. George Weston said Tuesday it remains committed to selling its remaining food business — consisting of cookies, cones, crackers and waffles. FGF Brands is a Canadian family-owned company founded in 2004. Its brands include Stonefire Authentic Flatbreads and Simple Joys Bakery and has bakeries in Canada and the United States.
West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. (TSX:WFG). Down $3.29 or 3.1 percent to $102.02. West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. has signed an agreement to purchase Georgia Pacific’s oriented beach board plant near Allendale, SC, for US$280 million. The company says the plant will give it the flexibility to better meet customer demand, particularly in the southeastern US. The factory, which started production of OSB in 2007, has been shut down since the end of 2019. . West Fraser says it plans to spend an estimated $70 million upgrading and optimizing the plant in preparation for restart. The factory is expected to employ about 135 people.
