“Our UAW John Deere National Negotiation Team went back to our local members after the previous preliminary agreement and explored membership concerns and priorities,” said Ray Curry, president of the UAW. Workers went on strike on October 14 after 90% of union members rejected the first tentative agreement.
This second preliminary agreement “includes more economic benefits and continues to provide the highest quality health benefits in the industry”, the UAW said in a statement.
The main sticking points were compensation and fairness for different employees with different pension plans, according to a person with knowledge of the negotiations.
“The negotiators have focused on improving the concerns identified by our members during our latest ratification process,” said Chuck Browning, vice president of the UAW.
The new six-year deal will cover 10,100 employees in 12 factories – as well as an additional 100 employees in two-part factories, John Deere said in a statement: Saturday.
Members will remain on strike until they vote on this new agreement.
