The Michael J. Berkeley ’85 Business Excellence Program is designed to provide support and advancement opportunities for students from underrepresented groups at PCSB. Building on PC’s original goal of enrolling immigrants, the Berkeley program aims to promote the professional development and educational excellence of PCB students and is open to all business students.
The Berkeley Program
The Berkeley program supports students in classroom studies, pursuing competitive internships, and launching desired careers with the following opportunities:
- guest speakers
- workshops
- career and job search advice
- alumni networks
- connect with local business and community leaders
Topics covered in these sessions include recruiting advice, best practices for resume writing, developing interviewing and communication skills, and developing soft skills such as public speaking, project management, and leadership development.
The Berkeley Scholars
Under the umbrella of the Berkeley Business Excellence Program, the Berkeley Scholars Program offers selected students personalized counseling, mentorship, and advanced career opportunities. The program helps them excel as students and as future business leaders.
Beginning in 2021, 6 freshmen will be selected through an application process each fall to become Berkeley Scholars, creating a cohort of 24 students in the fall of 2025. Berkeley Scholars are expected to sign a learning agreement, attend monthly programs and counseling sessions, and track their progress through the program.
In addition to targeted counseling and mentoring, other benefits for Berkeley Scholars include attending skill development boot camps, pre-registration for PCSB courses, access to financial support for experiential learning opportunities, and exclusive programs and networking opportunities designed to identify career paths and build networks.
The Berkeley Scholar application will be available in late September and expected in early November.

About Michael J. Berkeley ’85
Michael Berkeley embodied many qualities that endeared him to countless people throughout his life. He was born in New Rochelle, NY, attended Iona Preparatory School and graduated from Providence College in 1985 with a BS in Finance. At PC, Mike was an MLK Scholar, walked into the men’s basketball team and set his sights on a career on Wall Street. He received an MBA from Columbia Business School and an internship with Salomon Brothers. Mike then joined Merrill Lynch’s sales and trading program. That same year, he met his wife, Lourdes Perez, who would become the love of his life. They later had two sons. After honing his expertise for several years, Mike founded his own company, The Berkeley Group, with a focus on stock brokerage, private equity investments and various golf course development projects. Golfing was close and dear to Mike. He started caddying when he was 12 and was the first recipient of Winged Foot’s Gene Hayden Outstanding Caddy Award. As his success grew, Mike became one of the very first black members of Winged Foot; something that did not escape his notice. Mike died tragically on September 11, 2001. His office was on the 79th floor of the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
