The Detroit Red Wings Stock Exchange Week Four

After a rocky start to a four-game road trip, the Detroit Red Wings have dropped below .500 again, currently at 8-9-2 – let’s review some player performance by revisiting the “exchange”.

Dylan Larkin

After missing a few games for personal reasons, Larkin is electric. Perhaps the best example of the captain’s influence on the team was Tuesday night in Dallas. After Dallas took a 3-0 lead in the second period, the Wings began to claw back, scoring two goals in the final 11 minutes of the second period. However, Larkin was withdrawn due to a false positive COVID-19 test and missed the third period. Detroit was visibly depleted of energy and unable to complete the comeback.

Not only does Larkin bring speed and talent to the team, he also brings a fight and guts that can keep Detroit competitive almost every night.

Joe Veleno

With Mitchell Stephens injured and out of the lineup, Veleno is set to get an extended look as the center of the fourth line. He played a strong game against Vegas on Thursday night, which led to his second goal of the season. Veleno had an excellent off-season and pre-season and looks hungry to make the roster. Buy shares in the fledgling center before he becomes a fixture in the lineup, which could very well happen in the coming weeks.

Downward trend

Mitchell Stephens

Stephens’ stock is beyond his fault. He sustained a lower body injury against the Montreal Canadiens and has been placed on the injury reserve. It is unclear how long he will be out, but his stock is at an all-time low until he returns.

The team

It’s been a rough week for the Red Wings. When Detroit began their four-game road trip west, they were two games above .500, having won four of their last five. After a three-game slip, the team has fallen back below .500, now 8-9-2 in the season. The Wings have been extremely hot and cold this year, winning and losing in chunks. The road trip will be deemed a disaster if they fall into the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday night.

To hold

Moritz Seider

Seider is still second in rookie scores and he is still Detroit’s best defender. Not much has changed for the young German, so his stock remains stable.

Tyler Bertuzzi

Bertuzzi is still the leading goalscorer on the team and one of the most important pieces, but he’s been a bit quiet this week (to be fair, so was essentially the whole Detroit attack). For now, his stock is still extremely strong, but it didn’t fluctuate much during the rough stretch away from the team.
