Bold Colors – My Small Business

James Hollier has extensive management experience. With a background in accounting and business administration, he has worked successfully for both Fortune 100 companies and small businesses in management and CFO roles. So when it came time to retire, he knew he wanted something to keep him busy. He thought that buying a small business would be enough – as long as he had a good manager to handle the day-to-day tasks. After looking for opportunities in Denver, James didn’t find the right match, so he expanded his search to Boulder, and then he came across Paul Morrison Colors.

Paul Morrison Colors, an established Boulder hair salon since the 1990s, was for sale just north of the Pearl Street Mall on 15th Street. James fell in love with the venue and with no previous hair salon experience he bought the business in early March 2020 and renamed it Bolder Colours. Two weeks later, the pandemic struck.

“Running a hair salon is very different from anything I’ve ever done, but I’m adapting. Taking over the business during COVID was certainly an unexpected challenge, but we adapted to that too,” said James.

Bolder Colors is a renowned and respected salon offering services from cutting and styling to balayage, highlights, hair and scalp treatments and more. “For us, everything revolves around unburdening our customers. Our goal is to create trust with everyone who walks through the door – we want every customer to feel beautiful. My favorite aspect of the business is meeting so many people. I love hearing stories and getting to know people from all walks of life.”

Before buying this company, James was unfamiliar with the Boulder area. “Since owning the store, I’ve really come to love Boulder. I like that it’s a smaller, community oriented town. Our customers are amazing, with a different outlook and attitude to what life is and should be. Being a downtown business has made me appreciate the Boulderites lifestyle.”

James is a big supporter of the community. “To support us, support other downtown businesses. The more development and possibilities there are in Boulder, the better Bolder Colors will be.”
