The record high inflation rate of 5% in the eurozone, following inflation trends in the US, is becoming a major challenge for central banks worldwide. There is now a clear possibility of three Fed rate hikes in 2022 with the ECB and other leading central banks, including in emerging markets, shifting into a tightening mode. The rise in the US 10-year yield to 1.76% and the strengthening US dollar are indicative of the headwind in the equity markets. The pertinent question in India is to what extent the headwinds of higher growth and earnings visibility, reflected in the third quarter results, can counteract the headwinds of rising interest rates.

Dollar solid as inflation test looms

The dollar started the week with support as traders bet on US inflation data and appearances by several Federal Reserve officials should bolster pleas for higher interest rates. After a dip on Friday, the greenback stood near its 200-day moving average against the euro at $1.1357 in early trading in Asia on Monday. Against the yen, it firmed up slightly to 115.65, fairly close to last week’s five-year high of $116.35 per dollar.

SGX Nifty signals a positive start

Handy futures on the Singapore Exchange traded 49.5 points, or 0.28 percent, higher at 17,906.50, indicating Dalal Street was off to a positive start on Monday.

Tech View: Nifty sees resistance at high peaks

Nifty50 on Friday formed an indecisive formation on the daily chart for the second consecutive session, but eventually made a bullish candle on the weekly chart. Analysts said the index faces resistance at highs and lacks follow-up buying. Indecisive formations on a daily chart suggest the index is working out a consolidation range in the band 17,944-17,655, analysts say.

Asian stocks subdued for US inflation test

Asian stock markets came to a standstill on Monday as investors counted down to a new inflation reading in the US that could seal an early rate hike by the Federal Reserve, pushing bond yields higher and penalizing technology stocks. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific stocks outside of Japan was nearly flat, while South Korea lost 0.7 percent. Japan’s Nikkei has remained stable for the time being, after falling 1 percent last week.

US stocks closed lower Friday

US stocks closed lower Friday and much of Wall Street expected the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates as early as March, despite a mixed report on the US job market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average Index fell 4.81 points, or less than 0.1%, to 36,231.66. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell 144.96 points or 1% to 14,935.90. The S&P500 index fell 0.4%,

Rupee gains 8 paise to close at 74.34 vs. dollar

The Indian rupee gained 8 paise, closing at 74.34 against the US dollar on Friday, helped by a weaker greenback against key rivals and positive domestic stocks. In the interbank forex market, the local unit opened at 74.41 against the dollar and witnessed an intra-day high of 74.25, eventually ending the day at 74.34, gaining 8 paise from the previous close from 74.42.

Sensex, Nifty on Friday

The Sensex and Nifty found firmer ground on Friday as investors pooled energy, infrastructure and IT stocks amid a mixed trend in overseas markets. The 30-stock BSE Sensex regained some lost ground after the heavy sell-off from the previous session, finishing 142.81 points or 0.24 percent higher at 59,744.65. Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty rose 66.80 points or 0.38 percent to close at 17,812.70.
