tThe first three-day weekend of the year is over. Neither the stock market nor the bond market will be open for trading on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which falls on Monday, January 17, 2022.
Both stock and bond markets will reopen on Tuesday, after the three-day holiday weekend commemorating the civil rights leader’s birthday.
While MLK Day is meant to celebrate King’s birthday, the federal holiday is celebrated on the third Monday in January, regardless of the date. So while King’s birthday was January 15, the holiday is often not celebrated on that date. That will be the case in 2022.
The following is a schematic of stock market holidays and bond market holidays for 2022. Keep in mind that: regular trading hours for the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq Stock Market are weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern. On early closing days, the exchanges close at 1 p.m.; bond markets close early at 2pm

Holidays at the fair
When it comes to the stock and bond markets, if a holiday falls on a weekend, market closes are governed by two rules:
- If the holiday falls on a Saturday, the market closes on the Friday before.
- If the holiday falls on a Sunday, the market closes on the following Monday.
Stock and Bond Market Hours
The core trading hours for the NYSE and Nasdaq are on weekdays from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm. However, both exchanges offer premarket trading hours between 4 and 9:30 a.m. as well as late trading hours between 4 and 8 p.m.
Bond markets typically trade between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
On early closing days, the exchanges close at 1 p.m.; bond markets close early at 2pm
