Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) has entered into a 10-year strategic partnership with the London Stock Exchange Group (LSE: LSEG), including acquiring a 4% stake in the exchange.
The partnership will reportedly help Microsoft generate an additional US$5 billion in revenue and will help build a “centralized, financial data platform,” described as an “open all-in-one solution for data, analytics , workflow and collaboration”. for the financial ecosystem.
This follows LSEG’s acquisition of financial market data and infrastructure provider Refinitiv in 2021.
Microsoft has agreed to provide cloud infrastructure to extend the capabilities of the combined LSEG and Refinitiv datasets.
The jointly created platform will reportedly enable “seamless data democratization, collaboration, and new monetization opportunities.”
Reshaping customer experiences
The partnership aims to solve the problem of finance professionals using isolated applications and terminals by combining them into one centralized platform that will help reimagine customer experiences.
Crucially, data can then be used by leveraging Microsoft’s suite of productivity and analytics tools, such as Teams and Azure.
This then poses a challenge to existing providers that lack these all-encompassing features, which is most of the competition.
These providers include major brands such as NASDAQ, Bloomberg, Morningstar, and many others.
Benefits for cost and risk reduction
A particular benefit of uniting financial data, analytics and collaboration tools in one was that it reportedly reduced costs across the entire value chain. When these pieces are brought together, information can be accessed and stored in a single secure environment, eliminating the need for third-party servers that pose privacy and compliance risks.
More generally, acquiring the 4% stake in LSEG could be seen as a way for Microsoft to reinvest in its own business by strengthening its competitive position.
Microsoft faces fierce competition in the Business and Servers operating segments, which are populated by rivals such as Oracle and Google.
Keeping a higher proportion of users tied to the Microsoft product ecosystem opens up- and cross-selling opportunities that are not easily snatched by the competitors, and limits software subscription revenues stay.
LSEG will benefit equally if the pair rolls out additional products along the roadmap that are expected to “meaningfully” increase its revenue over time.
