The new year will undoubtedly bring new challenges and opportunities, especially in the wake of the pandemic and rampant inflation. This truth becomes increasingly evident in economic downturns as teams and companies come together and rely on each other. Let’s not look past this trust or take it for granted in our foxhole. A survey by Robert Half found that 66% of employees quit their jobs because they don’t feel appreciated for their work. The research also found that showing appreciation increases employee engagement, productivity and dedication. In short, appreciation costs nothing, but means everything.
It’s easy to expect employees to be motivated by receiving a paycheck, but that kind of thinking can be a mistake. Labor is reaching a fluidity with remote working, employees are bombarded with more tasks and responsibilities, and external factors are penetrating the psyche more than ever. At the same time, motivation doesn’t have to be complicated and can be a conscious part of our corporate culture. Appreciation, positive feedback, seeking input and listening to employee insights are all motivating, and motivated employees will become increasingly necessary in challenging times.
These are basic concepts that we understand but often forget while running the business. In this new year, we are starting to talk more and more about economic slowdowns and even layoffs, so take your time thanks and to think about your employees.
