DOE publishes strategy to accelerate and expand domestic offshore wind deployment

As our Offshore Wind Energy Strategy demonstrates, we are leveraging all our department resources to harness this clean and reliable US source of energy, which will create tens of thousands of well-paid unionized jobs and revitalize coastal communities.

OOffshore wind is growing rapidly around the world, becoming a central part of international decarbonization and a vital part of coastal economies, and the domestic potential to harness offshore wind is now emerging. There is currently 40 GW of offshore wind power in various stages of development, indicating potential for substantial expansion. The strategy released today categorizes DOE’s offshore wind energy efforts four pillars:

• NOW: Lower costs from $73 per megawatt hour (MWh) to $51 per MWh by 2030, develop a domestic supply chain and educate about sustainable, equitable deployment by offshore wind with solid bottom.
• FORWARD: Reach the Floating Offshore Wind Shot target to reduce costs by more than 70% to $45/MWh by 2035, eperpetuate US leadership in floating offshore wind design And manufacturing, and inform sustainable, just commitment of floating offshore wind.
• CONNECT: Enabling reliable and resilient transmission solutions for large-scale offshore wind deployment.
• TRANSFORM: Expansion of offshore cogeneration technologies for large-scale electrification and decarbonisation.

Collectively, these four pillars seek to support offshore wind development in a way that is economically, equitably and environmentally sustainable.
