In June 2021, the provincial government approved theAccessible BC Law in an effort to increase accessibility in BC and remove barriers for persons with disabilities.
Local governments are among the more than 750 public sector organizations listed in the Accessible BC Regulation and must have adopted the following by September 1, 2023:
- An accessibility committee
- An accessibility plan
- A tool to get feedback on accessibility
These requirements are intended to encourage organizations to plan their accessibility in a way that is informed by people with disabilities. The provincial government has advised that the requirements are flexible and that there are several ways that local governments are expected to meet the requirements.
To support local governments, the county and the Disability Alliance of BC have created a guidance document that details requirements, shares resources, offers strategies for meeting them, and highlights current funding options.
