Stocks rise to start big week with gains, Fed decision: stock market news today

[ad_1]

Equities rallied at the start of the week as investors bided their time ahead of a crucial week of gains and a major policy decision from the Federal Reserve.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) led the way up, moving more than 0.5%, or more than 175 points, its 11th consecutive day of gains. The S&P 500 (^GSPC) added about 0.4%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) added 0.2%.

Earnings season kicks into high gear this week, with more than 150 companies on the S&P 500 on the roll. Eyes are on Big Tech results from Microsoft (MSFT), Alphabet (GOOGL), and Meta (META), as the Nasdaq was swept up last week by second-quarter reports from Tesla (TSLA) and Netflix (NFLX).

Investors are also bracing for the Fed’s interest rate decision at the end of Wednesday’s policymakers’ meeting, which is widely expected to lead to a rate hike. The question on our minds is whether the central bank remains aggressive and signals that more hikes are likely, and what that means for the US economy’s likelihood of avoiding recession.
