Carnival Cruise Line has followed Royal Caribbean’s lead in adding a travel insurance requirement for unvaccinated cruisers departing Florida.
“Consistent with the practices of other shipping companies that are also resuming operations, and in the interest of our unvaccinated guests, this is important coverage if they experience a medical condition during their cruise,” Carnival said in a statement. by spokesman Vance Gulliksen.
The new requirement will be effective July 31 for cruises departing from Florida. Requirement will be lifted for children under 12 who are not yet eligible for vaccination in the US
All unvaccinated guests must provide proof of their travel insurance covering a minimum of $10,000 per person in medical expenses and $30,000 per person for emergency medical evacuation and with no exclusions for COVID-19, the cruise line said on its website:.
The policy must name the unvaccinated passenger as the holder or beneficiary and can be purchased from a travel insurance company of the passenger’s choice or through Carnival Vacation Protection.
Royal Caribbean International said last month it requires passengers 12 years and older who choose not to show proof of a COVID-19 vaccination to purchase travel insurance when departing from Florida.
“Insurance must cover medical, travel and other related costs for COVID-19 if they test positive on board,” Royal Caribbean said in a statement from spokesman Lyan Sierra-Caro.
Outside of Florida, Royal Caribbean requires all passengers eligible for COVID vaccination to show proof of vaccination. But in Florida, where proof of vaccination is requiredcompanies, including cruise lines, that violate state law.
The travel insurance requirement applies to sailings departing from Florida August 1 through December 31 and all bookings after June 28. Proof of travel insurance for unvaccinated passengers must be presented at check-in.
