SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – As coronavirus cases continue to rise on Hampton Roads, Hampton University is hitting the road and helping get more life-saving vaccines with its mobile vaccination clinic.
The Metropolitan Baptist Church in Suffolk wanted to show the community on Sunday how easy it is to get vaccinated.

Church leaders, including Pastor Robert Hobbs, hosted a barbecue with music and food for those looking to get vaccinated.
“Vaccination is important and we wanted to help get as many people vaccinated as possible because we realize this is a serious illness,” said Pastor Hobbs.

Health experts believe mobile clinics are making vaccinations more accessible, directly reaching communities most at risk of contracting COVID-19.
Community engagement coordinator Dr Aviance Lewis of Hampton University Mobile Immunization Clinic says greater accessibility comes with a faster return to normal life.
“The ease of accessibility, the fact that you’re in your comfort zone if you’re in your own neighborhood,” she said. “So all of those things helped relieve some of that fear.”
The first of many community immunization events, church leaders say it’s part of their mission to protect the community through events like this.
“It is part of the faith that when you take the picture, you are not only looking out for yourself, but you are also paying attention to others, because that prevents you from helping to be a transmitter for others,” he said. Hobbs said.
If you are still hesitant about getting the vaccine, it’s important to find answers to your questions, but just as important to get them from credible sources.
“Please also talk about a viable source. Your doctor, your pharmacist, consult the CDC. I called them personally. They will talk to you. They will answer your questions, ”said Dr Lewis.
The clinic will return to church on August 22 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. to administer the first and second doses.
