NEW DELHI: So far, around 5-10% of active Covid-19 cases have had to be hospitalized in the current wave, according to data from the Ministry of Health, although the Center has warned that the situation is dynamic and that the demand for hospitalization can change quickly. Sources say cases in major metropolitan cities are expected to peak in January itself, as many cities report a doubling time of less than two days. Bhushan called on states to monitor oxygen and intensive care beds, and ventilator support, in addition to monitoring healthcare workers’ needs and their daily availability. He added that the current increase in the number of cases appears to be due to a worrying variant (VOC) Omicron and the continued presence of another delta of VoC in large geographic areas across the country. Meanwhile, Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya also reviewed public health readiness for Covid-19 in a high-level meeting with state and UT health ministers. Mandaviya reiterated the importance of testing, monitoring, treating, vaccinating and adhering to appropriate Covid behavior.
