Swiss Study: Corona Crisis Reduced New Birth Rates in Europe by 14%

The British newspaper, The Independent, quoted Swiss researchers as saying that countries have undergone severe closures, and occupancy rates for intensive care units were greatly hit by the Corona pandemic.

These countries witnessed the largest decrease in the number of children born.

The researchers added that Europe saw a 14% drop in the number of new births in January 2021 compared to births in the same month in previous years.

The researchers linked the lower births to fears of the COVID-19 health crisis during the first wave of the pandemic.

The team added that these findings, published in the journal Human Reproduction, may have “long-term consequences for demographics, especially in Western Europe where there is an elderly population.”

Dr. Leo Bomar, an ultrasound specialist at Lausanne University Hospital and associate professor at the Faculty of Health Sciences in Lausanne, Switzerland, said couples’ fears of a health and social crisis at the time of the first wave of COVID-19 contributed to the decline in live births nine months later.
