Promoters of the 2023 Governors Ball were thrilled with two key decisions they made ahead of the three-day music festival that drew more than 100,000 spectators to Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

First, the Governors Ball has been held in the parking lot of Citi Field for the past two years, but this year organizers decided to hold it inside the park. Second, the doors opened on time Friday morning despite air quality issues caused by Canadian wildflowers smothering the five boroughs.

From Lizzo on opening night to the final punch of Lil Nas X followed by Kendrick Lamar in front of the biggest crowds of the weekend, Founders Entertainment co-founder and partner Tom Russell couldn’t have be more satisfied with both calls.

Governors Ball met and exceeded all of our expectations for what a Flushing Meadows Corona Park music festival could be like, Russell said. “It was amazing to see so many smiling faces enjoying the music, the local vendors and the company of their friends and neighbors.

Queens Borough President Donovan Richards picked up the sights and sounds of Governors Ball and gave him two thumbs up for the exposure he gave Flushing Meadows Corona Park and Queens itself.

There really is no greater attraction in New York than the world-class “Worlds Borough”, as proven last weekend by the incredible Governors Ball music festival and the elite artists who perform are performed in front of tens of thousands of fans every night. And Queens is just getting started, Richards said. Was the center of the world in terms of diversity, cuisine, culture and opportunity, and there’s no better place for events like Governors Ball than Queens. Thank you to everyone who came to our borough, spent their money here and enjoyed such a historic weekend.

Russell tipped those who made it easier to get from the parking lot to the park.

We are grateful to Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, Mayor Eric Adams, the New York City Department of Parks and the greater Queens community for giving us the opportunity to host such an event. special in such a special place,” Russell said.

Next up for Flushing Meadows Corona Park is the return of SummerStage with Kool and the Gang on Saturday, July 22.
