AHMEDABAD: As Covid-19 infections began to decline statewide, there was a drastic drop in sales of drugs used to treat the disease. Gujarat State Federation of Chemists and Drugstore Associations (FGSCDA) estimates suggest that sales of Covid drugs have fallen by 50% in terms of volumes. These include drugs such as favipiravir, azithromycin, ivermectin, doxycycline, and even paracetamol. There has also been a decline in sales of steroids such as dexamethasone. Sales of Covid drugs have fallen sharply amid declining cases in Gujarat, said Alpesh Patel, president of FGSCDA. Demand for these drugs fell by at least 50% in the second week of May compared to the last week of April. Patel added: With restrictions imposed across the state, new cases of Covid have started to decline. As a result, the demand for drugs has also declined. The demand for drugs was so high at one point that many people had piled up drugs for fear of shortages. The days of inventorying drugs were reduced from seven days to a single day. That means stocks of drugs that sold out in a week were taken off shelves within a day due to the unprecedented rise in cases, an Ahmedabad-based chemist said. Sales of anti-infectives and antibiotics and other drugs used for the treatment of Covid have fallen by almost 40% until last week, said Ankur Aggarwal, founder of Medkart. With a reduction in cases, the demand has declined. However, sales of drugs against mucormycosis have increased over the past two weeks. As the situation began to ease, the panic buying of drugs reduced significantly. Currently, much of the demand comes from rural areas of the state.
