Summer camp activities suspended after 5 children test positive for COVID-19

After five campers tested positive for COVID-19, the fun at a summer camp on Marco Island stopped.

Campers will end their last week of camp on August 2, but for now safety must continue to be fun. Marco Island city manager said he plans to research and test contacts with staff.

The building and parts of this park will undergo a thorough cleaning so that campers can safely end the summer.

At Mackle Park Friday, there were no campers running in the fields, at the water park, or inside the community center.

Mike Mcnees is the City Manager of Marco Island. “We are really disappointed to have to close the camp. We didn’t have a camp last summer and hopefully this short shutdown fixes that, ”Mcnees said.

Five children who tested positive for COVID-19 in elementary and middle school groups at Camp Mackle caused the camp to shut down.

Craig Fisher is a parent and teacher on Marco Island. “I think they’re making the right decision to shut it down for a while,” Fischer said.

Doug Hill said he felt bad for the kids who had to miss camp. “I was sad for the kids because it’s their summer. Not being able to attend camp is a real disappointment for them and for the parents, ”said Hill.

While the camp is closed, the teams will perform a thorough cleaning. Mcnees says disinfection is a top priority at camp, but masks are not required for campers.

“I think it’s a decision for the parents. It’s not a decision for the city, ”Mcnees said.

Either way, the city manager and campers are hoping to get back to running in the fields, water park and the Mackle Park community center very soon.

“I hope this will be the end and the kids can come back for the last week of camp,” Mcnees said.

There are approximately 60 children who come to Camp Mackle every day. And, while campers are not required to wear masks, camp staff at Camp Mackle do wear masks.
