Polish police have uncovered a covert crypto mining operation at their headquarters in Warsaw, local media reported. A computer scientist accused of striking digital coins on police computers has been fired and the case has been referred to the prosecution.

Polish National Police officers found what local media described as a crypto mining farm at Policja’s headquarters in Warsaw. The mining operation was allegedly organized by a computer technician, a civilian employee of the police, reported the news portal tvn24.pl citing two independent sources.

The crypto miner used police computers which he upgraded with video cards and specialized software. While the mining equipment likely consumed a significant amount of electricity due to the energy-intensive coin minting process, the greatest concern is that the police database records may have been leaked, the noted. one of the sources.

The computer network stores a lot of confidential information such as employee reports and digital files. Police officials insist that their database has not been compromised and that no breach of the internal police data transmission network has been detected so far.

The IT specialist has been fired and the contract of another employee, whose role has not yet been revealed, will also be terminated. Inspector Mariusz Ciarka, spokesperson for the National Police Command (KGP), confirmed to Gazeta Wyborcza that the crypto miner was immediately fired. He also commented:

The device he was using was not connected to any database and the case largely concerns the theft of electricity consumed by what is known as “cryptocurrency mining.”

The Polish police representative added that the case has already been transferred to the Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office as the investigation continues to establish whether a crime has been committed. Experts are now working to assess the losses for the police department in terms of the amount of electricity used to mine digital currencies.
