Many U.S. crypto advocates have launched an ambitious campaign to build support for an amendment to a controversial infrastructure bill claiming the legislation would usher in extensive oversight of crypto holders.
An updated version of the bill that would seek to fund and commit billions of dollars of public spending commitments into law was also deemed unacceptable to the crypto industry. Fears remain high that the legislation will seek to extract up to $ 28 billion from the crypto industry in the United States.
Advocates urge Twitter followers to support the amendment, initiated by a bipartisan group of senators (Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden, as well as Republican Senators Pat Toomey and Bitcoin enthusiast (BTC) Cynthia Lummis). The measure offers an alternative crypto plan that would seek to force crypto exchanges and other players to relay data to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Coin Center, a crypto lobby group, claimed the amendment explicitly excluded validators, hardware and software wallet makers, and the protocol. [developers] of the broad definition of a broker.
However, the support of the three senators is not sufficient to ensure the adoption of the amendment. The measure needs at least 60 votes to be added to the bill.
Crypto enthusiasts and industry players have rallied around a tool posted on the Fight for the Future website. Warning that the bill could kill crypto if passed, the site’s authors (who also called the issue a red alert on Twitter) urged U.S. citizens to enter their phone numbers. The tool then uses this data to identify the telephone numbers of users of senators’ offices. They wrote:
Please provide you with a suggestion of what to say and put you in direct contact with your legislative office.
Blockchain and crypto consultant Katherine Wu called the tool a super easy process.
However, Compound Labs General Counsel Jake Chervinsky wrote that some people were reporting problems communicating with their Senators using the link, suggesting other forms of contact if this was found to be the case.
He called on everyone to contact their senators now.
Coinbase chief Brian Armstrong warned the bill could have dire consequences if approved. He wrote that the bill would mean that almost anyone in the crypto ecosystem (miners, validators, smart contracts, open source developers, etc.) could be treated as a broker, which would impose reporting obligations on them. massive. The measure, he added, would also force exchanges like Coinbase and others to monitor their customers’ transactions in a more intrusive way than the rest of mainstream finance.
His thoughts were echoed by Krakens CEO, Coinbase rival, Jesse Powell, who wrote that the amendment is not going to suck.
He claimed that the process of using the tool to call his senators took [him] less than five minutes, but noted:
We are clearly not hitting them hard enough. Go for it !
A16z general partner Kathryn Haun, meanwhile, wrote that her company wrote to Chuck Schumer, the New York Senator and Senate Majority Leader, as well as Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell in support of the amendment.
“An appropriate regulatory strategy must reflect an important fact: Crypto is not a monolith. The universe of crypto extends far beyond its financial origins, encompassing works of art, community development and new ways of forming an organization, “a16z wrote, adding that” We may not allow you to sacrifice tomorrow’s economic opportunities because of a flawed bill that has a simple solution. “
Collins Belton, the managing partner of the Brookwood law firm, said he hoped everyone who had the opportunity to make their voices heard would support the campaign.
He added:
I know for many of us that traditional lobbying is not a comforting thing, but it helps to come out strong and make our representatives stand up for our interests as well.
