Crypto mining has grown in popularity in recent months, for both good and bad reasons. The growing crypto buzz has caught most people’s attention so much to the end product, and few people care how these digital assets come about. Today, various governments are cracking down on mining because of its environmental impact.
The Chinese government is currently cracking down on crypto miners, and the resulting effect has spilled over into the crypto space. While other countries like Thailand are also cracking down on crypto mining, China has stood out as more than 60% of miners are based in China.
On the other hand, the government of El Salvador is working on using volcanic energy to mine bitcoin. This will be a total change from the use of non-renewable energy sources that are harmful to the environment. For those of you who may be wondering what crypto mining is, adding transaction records to the blockchain protocol is the process of adding transaction records. In order to add the recording to the blockchain, the miner must solve a computer puzzle.
Mining is essential in the crypto space for many reasons
Crypto miners don’t just add any transaction record to the blockchain network; these transactions are controlled and verified to be correct. Therefore, without the mining process, there will be no way to ensure the integrity of the blockchain protocol. With their power-hungry computers, these miners can listen to transaction requests across the entire blockchain network and sort out the most valid ones.
Just like bank tellers, these miners check that everything is in place before validating a transaction. Miners look for two things when validating a transaction. First, they verify that the digital signature of the recipient of an entry proves that they are the right person to obtain the entry. Second, minors also help ensure that the recipient has not used that entry yet.
Crypto mining helps prevent a problem known as double spending, a form of high-tech counterfeiting. Imagine a user says Dave has $ 10 and gives it to Jane. Can Jane be sure that she received $ 10 from Dave and that it is not fake? It would have been easy in real life, but it’s not that easy in the digital world. During validation, if transactions are not verified due to counterfeiting, minors will not record this transaction and fraud will be avoided.
While crypto mining has many benefits, two major issues have cast a long shadow over mining
The computer puzzle that miners must solve before adding a block to the already existing blockchain requires enormous hardware. This hardware is known as ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) and consumes a lot of power.
According to the Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index, bitcoin has the same rate of energy consumption as Argentina. This means that miners spend a lot of money on energy to power their equipment.
Application-specific integrated circuits don’t come cheap, and you’ll need hundreds of them to run a mining process. With this expensive AISC equipment, not everyone can get into cryptocurrency mining. However, GoMining already solves the problem of the high cost of equipment – the company has created a token (GMT) that allows holders to earn income from mining without having to own ASIC equipment. Therefore, instead of owning the expensive and power-hungry ASICs to mine bitcoin, GMT token holders can share the mining revenue generated by the company’s fleet of devices.
There are other companies that are also looking to offer a better solution to mining problems. The Gryphon Digital Mining platform plans to create the world’s largest bitcoin miner with little to no carbon footprint. Mercuria is another company that strives to solve the high rate of energy consumption of mining.
According to CEO Marco Dunand, the company is looking to partner with crypto miners and provide them with renewable energy for their mining processes. This will help reduce carbon monoxide (IV) emissions associated with non-renewable energy.
The concept of mining is integral and essential for the future of cryptocurrency and blockchain networks. The government should be more diplomatic in its crackdown on crypto mining. Instead of shutting down a mining site, there should be a roadmap that miners should follow in order to achieve a robust and environmentally friendly environment. In addition, more crypto projects must be up to the occasion to tackle mining issues.
