Binance.US CEO Brian Brooks resigned just four months after joining the U.S. franchise of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange Binance.com.
In a tweet today, he wrote: “Despite the differences on strategic direction, I wish my former colleagues every success. New and exciting things to come!”
He took office on May 7 after a very productive role as the Acting Comptroller of the Currency, where he oversaw the federal banking regulator issuing the first national banking charter to a cryptocurrency firm, Anchorage Digital, and a provided guidance and interpretive letters paving the way for banks to hold collateral underlying stablecoins and participate in the clearing and settlement of blockchain-based transactions.
In a broad interview with Forbes a few weeks ago, he laid out a broad vision for Binance.US that went far beyond operating a cryptocurrency exchange. In fact, he said the trading business is not a profitable business in the long run.
He also highlighted the efforts he will be making to create greater independence from Binance.US, such as adding additional US-based members to its 3-person board and noted that the company was in the midst of an impressive fundraiser, stating that the terms sheets had been signed.
In a Twitter statement confirming Brooks’ resignation, Binance.com CEO Chanpeng Zhao wrote:

No other reason was given for the resignation, and a spokesperson for Brooks declined to give details.
Attention will now turn to his successor. Parent company Binance.com has been beset by accelerated regulatory oversight around the world, placing more emphasis on local regulated franchises such as Binance.US.
Some may wonder if her predecessor, Catherine Coley, who has remained silent since being replaced by Brooks, could take over the post she held as the first CEO of Binance.US.
